One of the Oldest Prosthetic Devices Ever Found, was a Toe!

Recently Swiss Egyptologists dug up an ancient prosthetic device…a big toe! It is estimated that the fake toe is around 3,000 years old. Not only is this impressive considering the age and time period it was found, but it also holds significant relevance in today’s modern medicine. Prosthetic devices for the big toe in today’s society are available; however, they are rarely seen throughout the day in our office.

One of the most common people we see with amputated toes is our diabetic population. Diabetes encompasses a large portion of our patient population at Healthy Feet Podiatry.  Our doctors pay special attention to our patients with diabetes by performing routine foot care, wound management and treating foot deformities associated with diabetes. Monitoring blood sugar is the single most important aspect of controlling diabetes. The more blood sugar fluctuates, the higher the risk of developing complications associated with diabetes such as neuropathy.  Burning, tingling and numbness are symptoms of neuropathy and can be an indicator that a diabetic is having difficulty controlling his or her sugar. When neuropathy occurs, diabetics can be more prone to developing ulcerations or open sores to the feet that can be difficult to heal. If left untreated, these diabetic foot ulcers can predispose a diabetic patient to amputation.

It is imperative if you are diabetic to see a podiatrist on a regular basis. By seeing our podiatrists at Healthy Feet Podiatry, we can help ensure proper lower extremity health by careful attention to neurological, vascular, musculoskeletal and dermatologic foot conditions that can occur with diabetes.  We also educate our patients with diabetes on what they can do at home to prevent problems from occurring with their feet. The best part, all insurances cover diabetic foot care on a 9 week basis!

If you or a loved one is diabetic, give us a call today at Healthy Feet Podiatry so we can help reduce your risk of ever needing a prosthetic toe!
