Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery in Florida

What is an MIS Bunion Surgery?

The MIS Bunion Procedure (or short for Minimally Invasive Surgery) is a revolutionary way to have your bunions corrected.  The traditional surgery results in a large, painful, and unsightly scar.  This form of minimally invasive bunion surgery minimizes all that.

Dr. Binh Nguyen is one of the few surgeons in the country who have mastered this procedure..  There are many podiatrists who have tried the minimally invasive approach, but none have perfected the technique as he has.  Florida’s expert in bunion surgery is right here in the Bay area.

How are bunions fixed?

  • The Skin - Regular bunionectomies require incisions over 3 to 4 inches long on the top of the foot. MIS bunionectomies only leave behind 2 or 3 small scars on the side of your foot, no bigger than the head of a pencil eraser.   No one will be able to tell that you had surgery except for you!
  • The Bone - Through those tiny incisions previously mentioned, your bone is surgically broken (osteotomy), shifted over, and placed back into the proper alignment. This correction is held together by small, titanium screws which reinforce and help keep your big toe straight.   And no, those screws will NOT stop you from getting past TSA at the airport.

How long is recovery?

This technique drastically reduces complications and recovery time. Patients are able to walk immediately in a protective boot and are back into regular shoes at ONE month.  Your surgically repaired bone usually takes about 6-8 weeks to fully heal, so full activity is expected around 3 months. Although the surgery site is very stable, we do suggest limited activity and rest during the recovery process.  Of course, results vary from patient to patient.

Where is the surgery performed?

Outpatient surgery centers are perfectly equipped to deal with this surgery.  No overnight stays are required at the hospital.  The procedure itself lasts between 1-2 hours.  This means you’ll be at home recovering, watching Netflix, and eating ice cream before you know it.

What are the benefits of MIS bunion surgery?

The beauty of MIS bunion surgery is that it is by definition minimally invasive.  This allows minimal tissue disruption which preserves more of your natural anatomy.  This gives your body a better healing environment  and in turn quicker recovery.  You’ll find that there is less pain, stiffness, and swelling compared to other methods of surgery.

Is the Minimally Invasive Bunion Procedure right for me?
