Brazil and PSG starter Neymar out for at least a month with broken foot

For even the casual soccer fan the name Neymar most likely rings a bell. Just last summer Neymar was officially the most expensive player ever purchased by a club costing some 200 million dollars!  His skill and technique are unmatched. However, a recent injury put the rest of his season and even his world cup hopes in jeopardy. Initial reports are he will be out anywhere from 1 month to 3 months!

As a podiatrist looking at the injury he sustained I cringe to think he could be back in 1 month. Club officials say he suffered a broken foot, which occurred when he rolled his ankle. Typically when someone breaks their foot with an “ankle roll” it involves the 5th metatarsal (long bone in the foot), and can commonly be whats called a Jones fracture. A Jones fracture is a fracture of the 5th metatarsal which occurs in an area of the bone that has a particularly poor blood supply. This may have you asking what does that mean? When bones break, they bleed! Thats what causes the swelling and bruising often associated, but it is also the first step in the healing process. Without this bleeding, healing can be very slow or even not at all! In cases like Neymar’s the general recommendation is at least 6-8 weeks of non weight bearing and possibly even surgical correction of the fracture.
