With the warm season in Florida just around the corner everyone wants pretty feet! Long, thick, discolored toenails are not necessarily desirable as we start to shed our shoes in place of sandals (just to clarify as a foot and ankle specialist I do not recommend sandals). Because of this I find it to be common place this time of year to have new patients coming in with concern about how their feet look. Curious as to what could be causing this crustiness?!
Long, thick toenails can be caused by two things! The dreaded nail fungus (Onychomycosis), and also nail dystrophy. Nail dystrophy is simply damage to the cells which produce the nail, therefore they are essentially bad employees. They constantly produce a product (the nail) that is not desirable to look at. Generally speaking, there is no cure for this problem, however we can make the nails much more desirable looking! Nail fungus however does have very successful treatment options available. Over the counter topical nail lacquers for the most part are like running up Mount Everest with skis on!
The good news is at Healthy Feet Podiatry, we use a combination treatment of oral medication along with a painless Diowave cold laser treatment to yield very high percentage results! That means if you call today, we can get you asap and have those feet looking better for summer! If you find yourself looking down in disgust, call one of our 3, soon to be 4 locations for your same day appointment!
