Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. sustained a severe ankle injury in his teams loss to the chargers this past weekend. Initial reports indicate that he broke his ankle and will be out for the rest of the season. An ankle fracture can come in a wide variety of severities that can change the duration of layoff substantially.
The Ankle joint involves 3 bones, the Tibia, the Fibula, and the Talus. The Tibia is the main leg bone often called the “shin” bone. The Fibula is the outside bone of the ankle which is often very visible. The Talus is the “floor” of the ankle joint and is actually the start of the foot. When someone injures their ankle any of these three bones an be affected but most commonly it is the Fibula, and the Tibia. In Odell’s case, reports indicate he broke his Fibula. Fibular fractures can often times be stabilized and treated conservatively in a walking boot/short leg cast. This is often due to the Fibula only bearing 12% of the bodies weight. However in some cases the fracture is in a poor position, or if a fast return to activity is paramount, surgical intervention and repair of the fracture may be indicated. Usually surgery requires a combination of plates and screws which your surgeon uses to provide structural support to the fibula and allow for better healing.
With a history of an ankle fracture or even sprain, you are at a drastically increased risk for arthritis of your ankle joint. If you find yourself in this position, regenerative medicine techniques such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Prolotherapy, Ozone etc can be used to attempt to relieve your pain in conjunction with customized ankle bracing. If your pain does not resolve with conservative measures or your arthritis is too severe, surgical options may be available to you such as a Total Ankle Replacement.
